Stranded Gloves

dropsgloves

I’m going to be teaching a class at Yarnify in March* on how to make these gloves, which are made from a free DROPS pattern. (I left the top one unblocked to help students be less critical about tension issues while the work is on the needles.) DROPS is a Norwegian yarn company that publishes numerous beautiful patterns that have been translated from pithy Norwegian instructions into English. American knitters tend to find them a little cryptic, so I’ve written my own translation of the pattern for the class, and I’m sharing it here.

DROPS 116-46

MC=Main color
CC=Contrast color
DPN=Double pointed needles
M1R=Make one right. Insert left needle under strand between its current and previous stitch from back to front and lift, knit into front of this stitch
M1L=Make one left. Insert needle under strand between its current and previous stitch from front to back and lift, knit into back of this stitch
PM=Place marker
SM=Slip marker

Right Glove

With smaller dpns and MC, cast on 56, join without twisting, and knit 2 rounds.
Next round: K2, P2 around. Repeat this round until cuff measures 11 cm/4 3/8”.

Change to larger dpns
Next round: K5, K2tog around. 48 sts.

Without cutting MC, knit next 2 rounds with CC.

Begin working color chart at arrow.

Thumb gusset
When piece measures 14 cm/5 1/4” from the beginning, begin working thumb gusset as follows:
Next round: K 25 in pattern, PM, with MC M1R, K1, M1L, PM, skip one stitch of color chart, and resume chart to end of round.
Next round: K25 in pattern, SM, work all stitches in MC, SM, skip one stitch of color chart, and resume chart to end of round.

Continue increasing every other round in this manner, twisting CC together with MC across thumb as needed, until there are 13 stitches between the markers, 60 stitches total. Work even until piece measures 18 cm/7” from beg.

Next round: K25 in pattern, slip 13 thumb stitches onto a holder, cast on one stitch, and rejoin round after thumb stitches. 48 sts.

Complete chart and then continue knitting in CC until piece measures 21 cm/8 1/4”

Little finger: Next round: K5 stitches, slip the next 38 stitches onto a holder, cast on 2 stitches, rejoin with last 5 stitches on the needles—12 sts. Knit around until little finger measures about 6 cm/2 3/8”, or desired length. K2tog around, cut yarn, thread through remaining 6 stitches and pull closed.

Hand: Slip 38 reserved stitches back onto dpns. Pick up 4 stitches across cast-on gap of little finger, K38 stitches. Next round, SSK, K2tog, K 38, 40 stitches.

Ring finger: K2 stitches picked up from little finger, K6, slip 26 onto holder, cast on one stitch, rejoin with last 6 stitches on the needles, K6—15 sts. Knit around until Ring finger measures about 7.5 cm/3” or desired length, K2tog around to last stitch, K1, cut yarn and thread through remaining 8 sts, pull closed.

Middle finger: Slip next 6 stitches on front of glove onto a dpn, and next 6 stitches on back of glove onto a dpn. Pick up 4 stitches from base of ring finger, knit next 6 stitches, cast on one stitch, join and knit next 6 stitches, end SSK, K2tog across picked-up stitches—15 sts. Knit around until Middle finger measures about 8.5 cm/3 1/4” or desired length, K2tog around to last stitch, K1, cut yarn and thread through remaining 8 sts, pull closed.

Index finger: Slip the remaining 14 stitches onto dpns. Pick up 4 stitches from the base of the Middle finger, join and knit 14 stitches, end SSK, K2tog across picked-up stitches—16 sts. Knit around until Middle finger measures about 7 cm/2 3/4” or desired length, K2tog around, cut yarn and thread through remaining 8 sts, pull closed.

Thumb: Slip the 13 reserved thumb gusset stitches onto dpns, pick up 3 stitches from cast-on edge behind the thumb stitches—16 sts. Knit around until thumb is about 6 cm/2 3/8” or desired length. K2tog around, cut yarn and thread through remaining 8 sts, pull closed.
